US STEEL IMPORT GREW 14 PCT IN H1 2022

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced that the U.S. imported a total of 2.8 million tons of steel in June 2022, including 2.2 million tons of completed steel, based on preliminary Census Bureau statistics (up 2.3pct and down 6.0pct, respectively, vs. May 2022).

Imports of completed steel have increased year to date by 34.7 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively, compared to 2021. Total steel imports in H1 2022 were 16.76 million tons, while completed steel imports was 9.97 million tons.

The market share of finished steel imports was predicted to be 25% in June and will remain at 25% through the first half of 2022. Heavy structural forms (up 61 percent), ingots and billets and slabs (up 51 percent), plates in coils (up 29 percent), sheets and strip all other metallic coated (up 16 percent), and tin plate are important steel goods that had a large rise in imports in June compared to May. (up 16pct).

Canada (635,000 tons, up 1% from May), Mexico (521,000 tons, up 8%), South Korea (299,000 tons, up 28%), Brazil (200,000 tons, up 57%), and Russia were the top suppliers in June (123,000 tons, up 521pct).
